Wellington Golf Club as it was known until it gained its ‘Royal’ status in 2004 dates back to 1895 and is one of the oldest golf clubs in New Zealand. After moving from its original location around 1905 the course layout remained largely unchanged until the early 1970’s when the legendary New Zealand golfer Bob Charles laid out a new 18 hole championship course along with a 9 hole academy course. Over the years there have been 7 New Zealand Opens at the club with 3 played over the older layout and 4 more recently including Northern Ireland’s Ronan Rafferty winning in 1987.
