Hillside Golf Club, Merseyside
It is thought that 1912 saw the first full season for Hillside golf club, though the first definitive evidence is a membership card from the season April 1913 to 1914. The most radical change to the course was started in 1956 with the appointment of Fred Hawtree as course architect. His plans were finally realised in 1967 with the opening of the new improved course. From the white tees the course at Hillside measures over 6,800 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea. After playing the course, Greg Norman wrote to the Club saying that 'The back nine were the best in Britain', while Jack Nicklaus described the course as 'A wild looking links'.
